Gavin, Ireland

Back pedal to the middle of the road where a fire did burn and a heart seemed cold / I was
Strung up by a placeless chord, forever luminating an endless fall
Doomed or have I assumed, lost in the same ol’ ways that I’m not trying to consume
Too much for the mind to explore, all the boats follow the line to the shore
Slept in on a summer’s day, it crept in like the spring of May, all aboard that freight bound train, another day, another fray
Walking up through the middle of the night.. my love stings bright
Lingering like a moth to a flame, anticipating a righteous claim
The pretty little lights tend to fade through that great big garden door
Life seems like an empty shell until you give a little present to a wishing well
Slept in on a summer’s day, it crept in like the spring of May, all aboard that freight bound train, another day, another fray
Slept in on a summer’s day, it crept in like the spring of May, all aboard that freight bound train, another day, another fray
Ain’t gon’ be bound in the state of this pen
Coming to a standstill, but I’m still standing
Holding on is still holding on
So float on down where the river bed runs
The song is about being stuck in a certain frame of mind. It touches on reminiscing on past experiences and noticing there may have been trauma that would have caused some of the intrusive thoughts. As the thoughts flood, we are convinced they may be true, but we reassure ourselves otherwise. It’s the blur between the good and the bad, when in that frame of mind it’s almost indistinguishable from our ability to maintain a positive mental state.
The first two verses and chorus is the struggle of wondering if you’re forever stuck or if there is light at the end of the tunnel. The bridge is the reassurance that all is fine, and to pay attention to the present, even with the volume of the thoughts tormenting us.
